Matrix World Metaverse Introduces Inscriptions: A Deep Dive

New Feature — Inscriptions
In our last article, we announced the integration of BNB Smart Chain (BSC), aligning with our team’s vision of becoming a leading chain-agnostic metaverse. To showcase our new BSC integration and our team’s technical prowess, we’ve now added the capability to permanently store images on-chain through the use of inscriptions on BSC and ETH directly from our website.

With the launch of this feature, any user can inscribe a commemorative ‘MW Card’ containing their ‘Nickname’ and the date of the inscription’s creation. Additionally, for landowners, a ‘Land Inscription Card’ representing their land and featuring our new land graphic design is available. These inscriptions are intended to capture a moment in time on the chain forever. It’s important to note that neither of these items are certificates of ownership; they act as souvenirs — similar to a POAP or FLOAT — and are purely for experimental purposes. As such, buying a Land inscription card does not grant ownership of that plot of Land.
Looking ahead, the team plans to expand this feature to other areas within Matrix World. One example is the ability to create a fully on-chain profile picture (PFP) inscription based on your in-world avatar, which will enable users to use their avatars as a virtual representation of themselves outside of Matrix World. This feature will be added with the introduction of our next feature release, the Avatar Editor.

What are inscriptions?
In blockchain transactions, the ‘Input Data’ field can store various types of arbitrary data. This field is often used to execute functions within a smart contract. For example, transferring an NFT from one wallet to another involves creating a transaction with a specific function call in this field. Additionally, this field can be used to embed text messages, similar to how inscriptions work. Unlike storing images on external servers like IPFS or Arweave, which are subject to changes or updates, inscriptions ensure that data is permanently and immutably recorded on the blockchain’s ledger.
After inscription data is successfully stored in an approved transaction and meets the protocol’s standards, it becomes the responsibility of an indexer to scan all transactions, identifying and prioritizing the data based on its inclusion and chronological order. As a part of this process, indexers assign an `inscription ID` and track the location of that item.
As the information is stored on-chain, your fees are based on the amount of data stored. For this reason, images will often be uploaded at a lower resolution finding the balance between cost of inscribing and quality of image.
Inscriptions, with their immutable characteristic, enable you to revisit your avatar’s image anytime, similar to how you might look back at a photo in a yearbook.

How to create an inscription in Matrix World
First, conect to the Matrix World website with your preferred crypto wallet. Then, click on any of the three chain icons where the ‘Connect Wallet’ button used to be and select ‘Profile.’ Alternatively, you can use the direct link to your profile: https://matrixworld.org/profile

Your profile will now feature some updated options, including ‘Nickname,’ which allows you to set your nickname, an ‘EVM’ icon indicating which connected wallets are EVM-compatible and can be used for inscriptions, and a new option to ‘View MW Card.’

User Profile
If you haven’t already, go ahead and set a nickname, as this will be required to create your ‘MW Card.’ Please note that the nickname is only for the MW Card and does not affect your in-world avatar name.

Once a nickname has been added, you can then select ‘View MW Card,’ as shown in the second image.

After loading, you can choose to either edit the card by selecting one of three backgrounds using the ‘refresh’ button, inscribe directly, or download the card.

You will have the option of choosing from EVM-compatible chains. In this example, we will proceed with the BNB Chain.
Payment Confirmation
After selecting your chain of choice, the inscription transaction will be populated. Your inscription will be created upon your confirmation. Please note that while Matrix World does not charge for this service, there is a small network fee needed in order to complete the process.
Land Information Card
You can also create an inscription of your land using the newly updated graphics. To do so, select any of your lands listed under the ‘My Land(s)’ heading. The land information card will then appear on the right-hand side, featuring the option to ‘PREVIEW INSCRIPTION.’ This allows you to see what your inscription will look like.

To continue with creating your inscription, select ‘CREATE AN INSCRIPTION.’ Once selected, you will be prompted to choose your blockchain of choice and confirm the creation transaction.
Please note that these inscriptions are purely for commemorative purposes and are not certificates of land ownership.
